The Rise of Dutch Synth Music in the 1980s

Future World Orchestra at the Top

In the 1980s, the Netherlands was captivated by the futuristic sounds of the synthesiser. This electronic music, characterised by tight rhythms and layered melodies, revolutionised the music world. While major international artists like Kraftwerk and Jean-Michel Jarre set the tone, the Netherlands found its own voice in the genre. One of the most prominent pioneers in this musical landscape was Future World Orchestra, a synth duo that pushed the boundaries of the genre and gained international recognition.

Future World Orchestra, founded in 1980 by Robert Pot and Gerto Heupink, managed to create a sound all its own with their melodic and futuristic music. Whereas many synth bands of the time experimented with abstract sounds and avant-garde compositions, Future World Orchestra focused on accessibility and atmosphere. Their debut album Mission Completed (1982) was a huge success and put them on the radar of both national and international music fans. The single ‘Desire’ became a hit in the Netherlands and established their name as a major player in the electronic music genre.

What made Future World Orchestra so unique was their ability to combine the powerful, digital sounds of synthesisers with clear, melodic structures. Their music sounded futuristic yet warm, managing to appeal to electronic music lovers and the general public alike. They created sounds that evoked images of distant planets and unexplored worlds, making their music not only aurally, but also visually and conceptually intriguing.

The Dutch synth scene of the 1980s was in many ways an underexposed gem. They gave the Netherlands its own voice in the international synth landscape and laid the foundation for the renewed interest in the genre, which we see again today in the revival of synthwave and retro wave.

In retrospect, Future World Orchestra is considered the most important Dutch synth group of the era. Their contribution to electronic music continues to inspire new generations of artists and fans of the 1980s. With their progressive sounds and unforgettable melodies, Future World Orchestra remains a symbol of the golden age of Dutch synth music.
